This machine involves circulating blood outside the patient through a filter. Eventually, blood will clot in the filter unless it is anticoagulated. When the filter clogs, doctors and nurses must stop the machine to change it – throwing away clotted blood and in the process, increasing blood loss and the need for transfusions.
